Abstract

Importance of dental health belief has been emphasized as a factor affecting dental health-related behavior. To verify various relations between each factor consisting dental health belief and many different dental health-related behavior, a survey on 2,310 pairs of a mother and a child has been performed. Dental health belief is divided into susceptibility, seriousness, salience, benefit, and barrier. A seven point Likert measure is used in this research. And for dental health-related behavior, the number of visits to dentists for preventing purpose and the frequency of tooth brushing have been observed. For the purpose of this analysis, two approaches have been employed. They are a stepwise multiple regression and a bivariate correlation analysis. The former takes dental health belief as a dependent variable and dental health-related behavior as an independent variable, and the latter takes a combination of the two. As a result, it is observed that larger amount of the variance of the model. can be achieved by separating the object behavior and the object belief to represent dental health belief with dental health-related behavior. It is also observed that, since dental health belief and dental health-related behavior of children are closely related to belief and behaviors of their mothers, it is preferable to encourage maternal and child dental health education.
